Choosing the Perfect Sympathy Flowers

A thoughtful guide to selecting appropriate arrangements for expressing condolences with grace and sensitivity.

Choosing the Perfect Sympathy Flowers

Sending flowers to express condolences is one of the most meaningful gestures, and one of the hardest to get right. This guide helps you choose with intention.

Reading the Situation

Consider the family's culture and faith. White flowers carry Western associations with mourning and purity. In some East Asian traditions, white flowers are exclusively funerary — in others, they're inappropriate for this use. When in doubt, choose soft, natural arrangements without strong symbolic color.

Arrangement Types

Standing sprays are for the service itself — they're large, formal, and displayed near the casket or altar. Sympathy bouquets are for the home — more intimate, appropriate before or after the service. A sympathy plant (orchid, succulent garden) lasts beyond the grief period and can be a comfort.

What to Avoid

Very bright, celebratory colors feel jarring. Overly perfumed flowers can be overwhelming in confined spaces. Avoid red roses, which carry romantic associations.

Adding a Personal Touch

If you knew the person, ask us about including their favorite flower. A single stem of something meaningful tucked into the arrangement transforms it from a gesture into a memory.
