The Language of Flowers

Each bloom carries meaning. Explore the Victorian tradition of floriography and what your favorite flowers symbolize.

The Language of Flowers

In the Victorian era, flowers were a coded language — a way to communicate feelings that social convention wouldn't permit in words. This tradition, called floriography, assigned specific meanings to every bloom.

Classic Meanings

Red roses have always spoken of romantic love. White roses carry reverence and new beginnings. Yellow roses, often misread as friendship, originally symbolized jealousy — worth knowing before you send them.

Peonies represent good fortune and happy marriage, making them perennial wedding favorites. Lavender lilacs mean first love. Purple hyacinths ask forgiveness. Forget-me-nots are precisely what they sound like.

Modern Interpretations

Contemporary floriography is less rigid. We think of flowers as emotional rather than literal — a bouquet of ranunculus and sweet peas communicates "I was thinking of you" through its delicacy, not its dictionary definition.

Designing with Meaning

When commissioning a custom arrangement for a milestone — a birth, a graduation, a condolence — share the occasion with us. We select blooms that carry emotional resonance appropriate to the moment, layering meaning beneath the beauty.
